Introduction

The MCX6400-V continues the extreme performance-low noise tradition of our "V" series heatsinks, and is designed to operate with AMD® Athlon 64 and Opteron (socket 754, 939 & 940) processors.

This model is the heaviest, and features a larger number of pins for higher heat dissipation than any other Swiftechheatsink at the date of this release. It is primarily intended for extreme applications and operating conditions.

Features highlights

  • Hybrid copper base, thin aluminum pin heatsink: the 3/8" thick copper base provides excellent heat capacity and lateral heat dispersion. The thin aluminum pins promote increased turbulence for more efficient heat dissipation compared to traditional fin extrusions

  • Patented Helicoid pin design (U.S. Patent 6,469,898): pins are individually machined in an helicoid shape, to increase their surface area, and further enhance heat dissipation efficiency

  • Several patents pending for concentrically aligned rows of pins, bent at multiple angles. The spacing and angles between the concentric rows has been precisely calculated to optimize cooling and reduce noise at air flow levels as low as 22 CFM and 23 dB-A

  • The MCX6400-V is compatible with 80 and 92mm fans. However, comparative test data shows that 80mm fans perform in general better with this heatsink, and at lower noise levels. Nonetheless, 92mm fan brackets are also available as an option. The MCX6400-V ships without a fan in order to allow users to customize the product to their application.
  • Quick and easy fan installation: the fan installs "in a snap" with convenient snap-rivets, provided with the heatsink.

  • Exceptional quality and attention to details: the heatsink base is lapped to 0.0003" (3/10 of 1/1000"), and polished to near-mirror finish to promote optimum thermal conductivity. Users are advised that while flatness is strictly respected for providing the most significant benefit to thermal interface, surface polish is a cosmetic component and may vary slightly from one heatsink to another. Re-lapping or polishing the heatsink base is never recommended.

Motherboard and CPU compatibility

The MCX6400-V is compatible with all known Athlon 64 and Opteron motherboards at the time of this release. The heatsink base fits inside of AMD® 's specified "no components" zone, and it does not interfere with surface mount components.

Retention Mechanism

  • The MCX6400-V is designed to be used without AMD® 's retention frame, but necessitates the backing plate for its installation.

  • The spring loaded mechanism provides a safe and effective attachment method to the motherboard, and complies with AMD® 's static and dynamic load specifications.

  • Because a majority of motherboard manufacturers already include the retention frame and backing plate with their offerings, and in an effort to spare this cost to the majority of users, Swiftech® does not include these items with the MCX64-V heatsink. These items are nonetheless offered as an option under part # AJ00172, as shown below.
Users are advised to inspect the backing plate shipped with their motherboard, and to note that a metallic backing-plate featuring threaded standoffs is required. An example is shown below, and is available under part # AJ00264.

Performance data

Comparative fan data

We have extensively tested a large number of fans in our labs. Below is comparative data showing the performance of our heatsink with the factory-bundled fan, versus a selection of a few fans that were found to perform well with the MCX64-V heatsink.

For user convenience, we separate all our bench tests into 3 distinct categories characterized by the fan's audible noise level:

Silent to low noise operations 22 to 26 dB-A: For non-overclocked processors. The MCX64-Vsurpasses all known temperature specifications published by AMD® to this date.

Medium noise operations 28 dB-A to 40 dB-A: From mild to serious overclocking levels depending on the fan selected, or high temperature environments. Up to 100 Watts processor load.

High noise operations 40 dB-A and up:  From serious to extreme overclocking depending on the fan selected, up to 130 Watts processor load.

* C/Ws shown are the heat sink to air values, excluding thermal resistance of the TIM joint, which will vary depending on the thermal interface used and bench test conditions. For reference, Swiftech's TIM joint bench test value is 0.09 °C/W. All tests are performed in an environmental chamber using Industry standard procedures, and calibrated equipment.

Comparative Data to the MCX6400-V

The graph below compares the thermal resistance of the MCX64-V and the MCX6400-V.

The C/Ws shown are the heat sink to air values, excluding the thermal resistance of the TIM joint; which will vary depending on the thermal interface used and bench test conditions. For reference, Swiftech's TIM joint bench test value is 0.09 °C/W. All tests are performed in an environmental chamber using standard procedures and calibrated equipment.

The rated airflow is based on the fan manufacturers data and is not correct in terms of the actual airflow through the heatsink. But as the same fans were used for both tests their relative performance can be easily compared with accuracy.
