Product Description

The Komodo™ HD6900 is a true full cover waterblock for AMD® Radeon™  HD 6970 and HD 6950 2Gb reference boards (*). The coolant flow path includes all critical components including GPU, memory and power mosfets.

The product is available in two versions compatible with both PCB revisions of the Radeon™ HD 6970 under the following part numbers:
  • Komodo™ HD6900 (compatible with AMD® 's initial PCB release)
  • Komodo™ HD6900-2 (compatible with AMD® 's new PCB release)

  • True full cover waterblock:  the block covers the full length of the card and utilizes all the original circuit board mounting points; this results in superior thermal interface with all the components, but more importantly prevents bending and/or damage to the card compared to competing solutions that leave critical components exposed for cost saving purposes; this exclusive Swiftech® initiative is an industry first.

  • Superior thermal performance at the GPU level thanks to our embedded 0.6x0.6mm thin-pin matrix located directly above the GPU area;

  • Moderate flow restriction by design to take into account multiple water-blocks in the same loop;

  • Chrome plated copper base plate, as opposed to commonly used nickel plating (which is yellowish);

  • Precision machined durable black acetal housing;

  • High thermal conductivity grease pads already pre-applied in the memory areas;  

  • Power mosfets are in direct contact with the cold plate for vastly superior heat transfer (non conductive Arctic Ceramique thermal compound included).

  • Exclusive adjustable standoff and removable VRM cold plate assure compatibility with all Radeon™ 6970 and 6950 2Gb reference models.

  • Compatible with the stock Radeon™ back-plate when present.

Product Compatibility

1. Radeon™ HD 6970 - Reference designs

How to recognize an AMD® reference design?  Any AMD® designed PCB should have a part number that starts with 102 (ie 102-xxxxx-xx).
 
There are two PCB versions for the Radeon™ HD 6970 reference design as shown below (click on picture to enlarge):
 
Differences affecting the design of the Komodo™ cooling solution are:
  • Power component areas
  • (1) mounting hole position is slightly different (north of VR components)
The Main body of the Komodo™ HD 6900 is compatible with both revisions; two removable VR plates are available to fit the power component areas. An adjustable standoff provides compatibility with both cards.
 
Two versions of the waterblock are offered to provide compatibility with these cards, and the corresponding VR plates are also available for sale separately for upgrade purposes; part numbers are Komodo™ HD6900 for the initial PCB release, and Komodo™ HD6900-2 for the new PCB revision.

Critical information:
 
The PCB revision numbers noted below represent the deciding factor to go by when selecting your Swiftech product,
rather than the brand and/or model number of the card.

Please carefully inspect your card to locate the PCB revision number. All brands using AMD reference PCB's normally
print this number on the card. It is usually located immediately above the gold PCI contacts (GPU side of the board).
 
Here is an example showing a PCB number 109-C20547 (the -00P at the end can be ignored)
Caution: 1 digit may make the difference between supported or not supported!

CrossFire or SLI recommended installation configuration:
 
When multiple VGA water-blocks are present in a loop, whether it is for SLI or CrossFire, we always recommend installing the VGA waterblocks in a parallel flow configuration as shown below, as opposed to a serial flow configuration (see this example of serial to compare). This will substantially reduce the flow restriction in the entire loop with little measurable effect on thermal cooling performance of the Komodo™ waterblocks because these blocks feature a highly efficient heat dissipation design at even moderate flow rates (Swiftech's thin pin matrix).

Sapphire hd6970 video card app

I am using 2 of these blocks with sapphire hd 6970 video cards ref: 100311-2sr.(rev.109-c20447)This uses -2 configuration water block. on installation i noted capacitor c1003 on the video card prevents proper install unless you remove part of the acetal material where it contacts the cap. also, the block does not seat completely against the voltage regs and i would recommend using the thermal blanket that came with stock fan cooler.

I went with water cooling after I picked up two MSI 6970s, and the stock cooling was the equivalent of two leaf blowers while gaming. After working with support at Swiftech I was able to get the correct version for my cards. Installation was straight forward and was speed up with the use of ArctiClean. Only tough part was setting up the hoses between the two cards, as I went with compression fittings that made that part hard. Before I installed the Komodo HD6900-2 on my GPUs I was getting up to 77c under load on my main GPU. Since the installation I don't get any higher then 45c under load, this is on a Crossfire-X setup with CPU as well. My idle temps went from 61c to 31c as well. I'm super thrilled I don't have to hear those stock coolers anymore. When I placed my order I received a follow up call due to me ordering too many 1/2in barbs for my setup, the caller said I would see the charge back of 10.00 after it processed. Kudos for making sure I wasn't buying what I didn't need!
